Waste Management
Waste minimization is a key step to a sustainable future. Gulf recognizes that landfills are one of the least desirable methods of waste disposal. That’s why we have set a target to reduce our operational waste to landfills to zero by 2020. In 2018, we disposed of 684.86 metric tons of waste and were able to recycle 1150.15 metric tons. We are seeking innovative approaches to manage this non-hazardous waste in a more sustainable way, such as using sediment from our water treatment process to fill land on construction sites or create useful products. We are currently working to develop the leftover sediment from our water treatment process into useful products such as fertilizer, bricks and flower pots. We are also investing in hiring specialized waste disposal companies that will take other operational waste, such as used light bulbs and air filters, and turn them into alternative fuels or construction materials. As part of our on-going waste reduction efforts, these innovations are being implemented in conjunction with individual waste reduction activities such as our Bring Your Own Lunchbox campaign to reduce plastic waste. We will continue to find ways to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfills until we reach our Zero Industrial Waste to Landfill target.
