To commemorate His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua’s 72nd birthday, Gulf Energy Development Public Company Limited (GULF) participated in the launch of the ‘Phuket Sandbox’ initiative as a model for the conservation of 72 beaches in honor of H.M. the King’s 6th cycle birthday anniversary on 28 July 2024. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has presided over the event at Patong Beach, Phuket Province. The project involves collaboration between the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources under Ministry of National Resources and Environment, Minister of Interior, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Tourism and Sports, and GULF. By fostering public awareness of environmental conservation, the project seeks to promote sustainable marine and coastal ecotourism. A key component is reducing single-use plastic and encouraging eco-friendly packaging within these tourist destinations.

Mr. Tanon Tantisunthorn, Executive Officer, Gulf Energy Development Public Company Limited, stated, “The problem of marine waste has widespread impacts in many areas, including the economy, tourism, the environment, and affects people’s quality of life. It is also a cause of global warming. GULF places importance on proper waste management to prevent long-term impacts. In 2022, GULF signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in marine waste management, piloting 5 major river mouths that flow into the sea and conducting a waste survey in Khlong Tha Chin area, Sirey Island, Phuket Province, a region heavily impacted by marine pollution. By collaborating with government agencies, GULF aims to develop sustainable waste management solutions and mitigate the long-term consequences of marine debris.”

The ‘Phuket Sandbox’ Royal Beach Conservation Project honors His Majesty the King’s 6th Cycle Birthday Anniversary by addressing marine waste on 72 beaches across seven provinces: Trat, Rayong, Chonburi, Surat Thani, Trang, Krabi, and Phuket. Phuket Sandbox serves as a model for this initiative, focusing on 14 key beaches: Patong, Kata, Surin, Yanui, Kata Noi, Karon, Freedom, Paradise, Nai Harn, Rawai, Laem Ka, Layan, Bang Tao, and Nai Yang. By restoring these beaches, the project aims to boost tourism confidence and contribute to Thailand’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero emissions by 2065.
